Less Bills, More Trees: The DiGi Way
Another initiative to address climate change from DiGi

SHAH ALAM, 8 DECEMBER 2009: As part of its Deep Green initiative, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ("DiGi") is on a mission to raise funds to reforest up to 120,000 square metres of the Kinabatangan forest.

This 2-month campaign, which begins on 4 December 2009, will see DiGi donating RM3 to WWF-Malaysia for each postpaid customer who opts for electronic billing and unsubscribe for paper billings. With a mission to raise up a total of RM100,000, the contribution will be used to support the Kinabatangan Corridor of Life (K-CoL) reforestation project.

According to Loh Keh Jiat, DiGi's Head of Product Marketing, "This is an initiative that can reduce the climate impact of our customers and other key stakeholders by encouraging our postpaid customers to receive their monthly statement electronically instead of the usual paper bills.

"The amount donated is what the customers have been paying every month for their itemised billing. Besides playing a role in conserving the country's forest, the customers also get to reduce their monthly bill by RM3. Each contribution of RM3 can help to reforest an area equivalent to the size of 75 pieces of postpaid bill envelopes placed side-by-side - that's approximately 3 square meters," he added.

With the fund, WWF-Malaysia will create forest connectivity within K-CoL, which will eventually allow wider wildlife movement as well as improve the quality of habitat along the forest corridor. This will also contribute towards restoring the ecological integrity of the K-CoL floodplain and help to conserve endangered wildlife and support ecotourism. The Kinabatangan forest is home to at least 10 rare species of wildlife including orang-utan, proboscis monkey and pygmy elephant.

"Effective January 2010, itemised bills will be chargeable to both principal and supplementary line holders at RM3 per month. This is part of DiGi's initiative to encourage green mindset amongst our customers and make them realise that going green can be mutually beneficial for everyone and not another business expense to DiGi," said Loh.

To opt for e-billing, interested customers will just need to log-on to their OCS webpage, accessible via digi.com.my, go to "My Account" and click on "Unsubscribe Paper Bill" They can also contact DiGi Customer Service at 016 221 1800.
