DiGi Kicks Off 2nd Edition of Deep Green Challenge for Change

SHAH ALAM, 10 AUGUST 2010: DiGi.Com Berhad ("DiGi") today launched Deep Green Challenge for Change 2010 - a competition for Malaysians and students of all institutes of higher learning to showcase the best GreenTech and Social Venture Ideas.

Challenge for Change is aligned with DiGi's Deep Green programme which addresses energy efficiency within the company's business, and broader areas of sustainability with related stakeholders. Deep Green includes key initiatives involving DiGi's network, information technology (IT) systems, building and facilities, fleet and initiatives with employees, customers, partners, and the community.

15 teams from eight Malaysian universities participated in the inaugural Challenge for Change programme, which kicked-off in July 2009. Six (6) teams were then selected for the final round where they undertook projects to research and design proof of concepts of renewable energy solutions for rural, underserved communities in Malaysia.

DiGi's chief executive officer Henrik Clausen said that last year's success encouraged DiGi to push the envelope on climate change and take this programme to the next level. "This year's programme focuses on entrepreneurship of green practices and gives local talents international exposure. Additionally, we've also aligned the programme to incorporate environmental practices at Community Broadband Centers to enhance our support for development of broadband in rural areas," added Clausen.

This year's Challenge for Change 2010 aims to instill values of sustainability and encourage entrepreneurship among all Malaysians.

Participants are invited to take part in two challenges:

1) Social Venture Challenge:

  • Participants are required to develop a sustainable business idea that could be implemented at any of DiGi's Community Broadband Centres, covering the categories of Energy, Environment, Agriculture, and Education

  • Participants have to submit their ideas via a 15-page powerpoint presentation
  • Finalists and winners stand a chance to receive up to RM5,000 as seed funds to develop their solutions. Overall winner from the Social Venture challenge will be announced in January 2011 and can win up to RM10,000 in cash
  • Finalists and winners will also gain experiential learning from social entrepreneur and industry experts, and exposure to DiGi's business culture
