Rollout of prepaid mobile registration begins in Penang and Malacca

Process is simple and hassle-free

Penang, 1 October 2005 - Prepaid mobile users in Penang and Malacca will be the first in the country to be registered from today in line with the Government's call for prepaid registration.

The campaign was launched today by Deputy Minister of Energy, Water and Communications, YB Dato' Shaziman bin Abu Mansor, in Penang attended by the state's Executive Councillor, Y.B. Encik Lau Chek Tuan.

Under a three-month pilot, which kicks-off in the two states, it is compulsory for all new prepaid customers to register when they purchase a new prepaid pack. Existing users are also encouraged to do so as the nationwide implementation to register all prepaid users in the rest of the country will commence on 1 January 2006.

In support of the Government's directive for prepaid registration, the three mobile service providers - Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd and Maxis Communications Berhad - have streamlined the registration process for simple and hassle-free convenience.

Customers of the respective mobile service providers will just need to visit their respective service centres, authorized agents or dealers, fill up a registration form with details of their name, Identity Card number and prepaid phone numbers. For verification purposes, customers will need to bring proof of identity in the form of their Identity Card for Malaysians and valid passport or other travel documents for foreigners, along with their mobile phone.

Prepaid registration is free and all information collected will be treated with strictest confidence by the mobile service providers who will ensure that customers' data is secured.

Celcom, DiGi and Maxis are fully in support of the Government's call for prepaid registration especially when it benefits the country, industry and consumers.

In conjunction with the launch, the mobile service providers are staging a two-day roadshow in Plaza Gurney (October 1 & 2) to educate consumers on the benefits of prepaid registration and provide convenience to prepaid users who wish to register. All prepaid users who take the opportunity to register their lines during the three-month project will receive special incentives once the customers' information is verified.

On-hand to lend their support to the campaign were popular TV Host, Soong Ai Ling and DJ Rizal of XFresh.

A similar event will be held in Mahkota Parade, Melaka on 8 and 9 October.
