DiGi pays tribute to 16 of Malaysia's Favourites at the WWWoW Awards Event Finale
5,192 nominations submitted, 228,588 votes cast, 16 award winners announced
Kuala Lumpur, 12 July 2011: DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ("DiGi") today revealed 16 of Malaysia's Favourite Netizens at the DiGi WWWoW Awards Event Finale, in an extravaganza that brought together some of the big players in the Malaysian Internet scene under one roof.
Since the nomination began at the end of April 2011, the DiGi WWWoW Awards has been a viral buzzword. The hashtag #digiwwwow has been tagged thousands of times, the award name generated 2.77 million results on Google search, and the wwwow.my website has recorded over 520,000 visitors and 2.6 million page views. In just two months after the call for public submission, the organisers received 5,192 submissions of nominations, while the canvassing of votes by the nominees resulted in 228,588 votes cast.
According to DiGi's Head of Marketing Services, Sulin Lau, "The idea behind holding the awards was for all of us to celebrate the Internet in Malaysia. At DiGi, we wanted to pay tribute to ordinary Malaysians who are doing extraordinary things online - from publishing their own opinions, producing their own TV shows, starting new businesses, or mobilising the power of the Internet for good causes."
"At DiGi, we always believed that the Internet is for all. With 16 different categories of participants, the submissions that we have received and seen have shown us how creative Malaysians can be. We've seen a lot of amazing submissions from stay-at-home mothers to college students, from pre-teens right up to above-45 Internet users. This clearly shows that the Internet is a tool that can be used by anyone from any walk of life. Looking at our list of winners at this event finale, everyone can see that the Internet is a powerful tool not just to spark interest from the public but also to harness that interest into action," Sulin added.
The DiGi WWWoW Awards was the first people's choice Internet awards for Malaysians by Malaysians. A collaborative project with ASTRO, Era.fm, Hitz.fm, Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Nuffnang, Lowyat.net, Malaysia Airlines, Mudah.my, Flickr, Karangkraf, Says.my, Exabytes, Innity and the Malaysian Digital Association (MDA), winners were nominated and voted for by Malaysian Netizens. Peugeot is the official car sponsor for the finale.
The DiGi WWWoW Awards kicked off on 21 April 2011 with nomination and submission of entries by all residents of Malaysia. The voting was also opened to the public via Facebook and ended on 20 June 2011.
