RM250,000, the first tranche of RM1 million contribution under the GDRN coalition to support COVID-19 humanitarian efforts

SUBANG JAYA, 17 December 2020 – Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) today announced its two-year partnership with MERCY Malaysia to assist in Malaysia’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery initiatives, starting with a RM1,000,000 monetary contribution as part of a larger industry initiative to support various on-ground community programmes.

The first of four RM250,000 tranches was channeled earlier this month towards immediate COVID-19 emergency relief efforts in Sabah, one of the worst hit states of the pandemic. The funds were distributed to mobilise assistance to health facilities as part of infection prevention and control, provide supply of medical equipment and supplies including PPE sets, ICU related equipment and antigen rapid test kits, food supplies for vulnerable communities, and support the deployment of volunteers.

Digi’s Head of Sustainability, Philip Ling, said that as part of Digi’s Yellow Heart commitment towards being a responsible business, it is the company’s social responsibility to support the recovery of the nation through these challenging times.

“Through this partnership with MERCY Malaysia, we hope to reach the heart of the community in Sabah and offer immediate disaster and medical relief to alleviate the situation on the ground. We hope the contribution will help to ramp up efforts by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and MOH in combatting this pandemic. We are also looking to include other initiatives and mobilise subsequent funding to areas with the most urgent need or for community building in worst-hit areas, depending on the evolution of the pandemic,” said Philip.

MERCY Malaysia’s President, Dato’ Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus said, “As Malaysians nationwide continue to battle the pandemic, it is important that we rally support to offer immediate assistance to those in need. We are delighted to work with Digi as it complements the support carried out in other areas as identified by MOH and the Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) and we certainly welcome more partnerships like these that enable us to provide support where required and positively impact the community.”

Digi’s RM1 million pledge to MERCY Malaysia comes as an effort to support the humanitarian assistance initiatives of the GLC Disaster Network (GDRN) under the Ministry of Health (MOH). In addition to the monetary contributions extended through this MERCY Malaysia partnership, Digi continues to connect customers to what matters most by supporting them with free 1GB internet daily to access education, productivity and information-related services.
