Final tranche donation of the RM1million pledged to MERCY Malaysia for COVID-19 Recovery & Response efforts

SUBANG JAYA, 25 January 2021 – Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) donated RM130,000 to MERCY Malaysia’s ongoing COVID-19 Recovery & Response efforts, completing its final tranche of the RM1 million pledge.

This third tranche donation will be mobilised to support the healthcare and rehabilitation services for former COVID-19 patients, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with chronic diseases or comorbidities (former category 4 and 5 patients).

Digi’s Head of Sustainability, Philip Ling said that two years of working closely with MERCY Malaysia in COVID-19 healthcare support has presented a clear reminder that the fight against COVID-19 is far from over.

“As we move into year three of the pandemic, Digi sees the responsibility and need to continue supporting our nation’s healthcare system and improving health outcomes of those recovering from COVID-19. We encourage Malaysians to get their booster shots to protect ourselves and our loved ones, while ensuring the continued resiliency of the nation,” he said.

As part of Digi’s Yellow Heart commitment towards being a responsible business, it has pledged RM1 million to the GLC/GLIC Disaster Response Network (GDRN) in 2020. The total fund has been channeled through MERCY Malaysia to provide medical and humanitarian efforts in supporting the Ministry of Health combat the pandemic.

Appreciating Digi’s continued support in this initiative, MERCY Malaysia President, Professor Dato’ Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus said it is a rewarding experience to see cross-sector partnership leveraging complementary capabilities that are focused on helping the healthcare services respond to COVID-19.

“Post-trauma healthcare is equally fundamental to ensure patients’ continued well-being as such channeling this final tranche donation for early rehabilitation care for these vulnerable groups is paramount to improving their health outcomes,” he said

The first tranche of RM250,000 was used to support frontliners in Sabah with purchase of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and test kits to conduct swab tests for marginalised groups. Over 1,000 screening tests were completed during the third wave of the Movement Control Order and over 9,000 PPEs purchased for frontliners.

The second tranche of RM620,000 was used to purchase medical equipments for public hospitals nationwide and to support the vaccination needs in coordination with the COVID-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF). Over 11,000 members of needy groups including persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens and rural communities in Kelantan and Sabah have been vaccinated through this initiative.

Apart from this initiative, Digi as a telecommunications service provider, has also supported health workers by providing devices and mobile plans for virtual assessment and counselling with patients while ensuring availability of strong network at essential sites like hospitals, quarantine centres, vaccination centres and residential areas.
