DiGi Commits 500 Netbooks for students in Kudat
Provides free 3G modems and training on Internet Access

KUDAT, SABAH, 15 JULY 2010: In support of the 1Malaysia Broadband-Netbook Programme, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ("DiGi") in collaboration with Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC) gave away 100 units of Netbook to students from low income families staying in Pulau Banggi, Kudat.

Initiated under the Universal Service Provision (USP) fund, the students received their Netbooks from the Minister of Information Communication and Culture, YB Dato' Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim during the launch of the programme held in Pulau Banggi. Another 400 units of Netbook will also be distributed to selected students who are staying in Kudat and the surrounding areas within the next few weeks.

According to DiGi's Director of Corporate Affairs, Zaiton Hj. Idrus, "DiGi supports the Government's effort in bridging the digital divide whilst developing a knowledge society towards its goal of becoming a high-income economy by 2020."

"We are pleased to be a part of this initiative. We believe this will help ensure that students in underserved areas are given the same opportunity to be IT savvy. Going beyond just giving away netbooks, we are also providing free 3G modems along with prepaid DiGi mobile internet packages for the first 100 netbook recipients," she added.

"Recognising that many of these children have never before touched a netbook, much less to be connected to the internet, we have coordinated with MCMC to organise a day's training for the children and a special tutoring on how to get connected with DiGi Mobile Internet. Anyone can sponsor a computer, but to be really committed and fully engaged we strive to go the extra mile by organizing training session for these children. This is our continued commitment as we establish more and more Community Broadband Centres (CBCs) nationwide."

As part of the 1Malaysia Broadband-Netbook Programme, DiGi will, in stages, give out a total of 6,500 units of netbooks to be distributed to the students living in the areas surrounding DiGi's 13 CBCs.
