DiGi celebrates age-old Sea Gypsy tradition in Sabah

Kota Kinabalu, 16 April 2009: DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ("DiGi") is proud to be the official telecommunications service provider of the 16th Regatta Lepa, an annual water festival in Semporna, Sabah.

DiGi's Head of Region for Sabah and Sarawak, Benny Wee said DiGi's participation in this year's regatta reiterates the company's commitment to continuously support the state government's efforts in promoting Sabah as an exciting tourist destination.

"The Regatta Lepa is a great way to draw the world's attention to the rich and unique cultural heritage in Sabah. We are happy to extend our support to the state government in making this ethnic celebration a success," added Wee.

To be held on 18-19 April, Regatta Lepa is an event that celebrates the traditional lifestyle of the ethnic tribe, Bajau Laut. These sea gypsies live primarily on single-mast sailing boats called Lepa, from raising their families to fishing as a source of livelihood. The event promises to be a colourful and dazzling event with the Lepa boats attractively and ornately decked, all vying to be the winner of the Most Beautiful Lepa.

Other activities include exciting traditional sea sports games such as boat tug-of-war and rowing competition; beauty pageant as well as local ethnic music and dance performances.

According to Wee, DiGi's participation in the regatta is also one of the many ways for the company to thank its customers for their continuous support as well as to engage the customers with the DiGi brand.

"This is our way of connecting with our customers beyond just providing excellent service while reinforcing our presence in the local market. DiGi believes in leveraging on on-ground events such as this regatta to reach out to our customers at grassroots level in a fun and interesting way."

There will be many fun-filled activities at the DiGi booth for the Regatta Lepa visitors to take part in exciting games and win exclusive DiGi premiums.
