Community in Kg Ubai to benefit from DiGi CBC
Expanding online horizons for local entrepreneurs

SHAH ALAM, 30 JULY 2010: In its continuous effort to support the National Broadband Initiative to bring broadband to the whole nation, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ("DiGi") has launched yet another Community Broadband Centre ("CBC") recently.

Located in Kampung Ubai, Mukim Penom, Kuantan, the CBC was officiated by YBhg Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hj Hassan, the Chief Secretary to the Government, accompanied by SKMM's Chief Regulatory and Supervisory Officer, Dato' Jailani Johari and DiGi's Director of Corporate Affairs, Puan Hjh Zaiton Idrus.

The launch also saw the introduction of two websites featuring two local entrepreneurs who have utilised the facilities at the CBC to kick start their venture into the online sphere. Both websites were developed with the help of the centre's facilitators to sell Ubai Nasi Dagang and Ubai Traditional Kueh.

On this development, Zaiton said: "Given the right opportunity, the rural community is equally interested to find alternate ways to augment their income as means to enhance their standard of living.

"We are excited that we can support the local community members and at the same time, stimulate the local industry by providing a platform for them to market their products virtually. It is our hope there will be more local entrepreneurs who follow the footsteps of Encik Rusli Omar and Puan Hajjah Saadiah Sudin, and make full use of the CBC's facilities and reap the benefits," she added.

At the launch, DiGi also gave away 10 laptops together with free 3G modems and prepaid DiGi mobile internet packages to local stakeholders in the community, which included students and cottage industry business owners.

"DiGi is committed to provide internet access facilities to the underserved communities in efforts to ensure they have equal opportunity to be IT savvy. We believe the CBC will open up the community to unlimited information and educational resources, paving the way for them to enjoy equal opportunities for both social and economic empowerment," explained Zaiton.

Started in March 2010, the centre has received encouraging response from the community members, especially from the students.

DiGi has also been awarded CBCs in Melaka, Kelantan, Terengganu and Johor Bharu. It is committed to launch a CBC in Melaka and another two in the East Coast before year end.
