Ramping up efforts to help Malaysians stay safe online and offline

SUBANG JAYA, 1 September 2022 – As scammers and hackers become more creative and resourceful, Malaysians must unite to fight these enemies of societies and safeguard themselves. Ramping up efforts on scam awareness, Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) urges Malaysians to always stay vigilant online and offline.

A recent dipstick survey carried out by Digi to gauge public awareness on scams revealed that 72% of 318 working adults respondents are still unable to identify scams, 63% would disclose their personal data when received a call claiming to be from a bank and 58% would click links from unidentified sources.

Digi’s Head of Sustainability Philip Ling said the statistics, although from a small sample, shows the need for continuous reminders to stay alert and resilient against the subtle and manipulative scam and fraud attacks that is becoming more common in society.

“This year’s National Day theme of Keluarga Malaysia, Teguh Bersama, echoes the call for Malaysians to work together to build our resilience against all kinds of cyberattacks including scams. Scammers are continuously targeting the public in moments when they least expect it. We hope to continue educating people to identify risks online or offline and safeguard their personal information. Efforts like this can be further amplified through cross-sector collaborations as we progress to build a safer and better digital future for all Malaysians,” said Philip.

Ramping up efforts on privacy and internet safety

With data being an important resource in the rapidly evolving digital world, cybercriminals are always on the hunt for consumer’s personal information.

Emphasising the importance of personal data and privacy protection, Digi’s Data Protection Officer Kulani Kulasingam said, “Malaysians should not take the value of their personal data for granted. The first step to do so is within their means. This includes their email addresses, banking details, whereabouts and even photos shared on social media accounts. Oversharing information about ourselves can expose us to potential dangers both online and offline.”

As part of its Yellow Heart commitment to continuously empower societies, Digi encourages the public to refer to these educational materials and share with family and friends to stay safe online and offline:
